Evelyn "Evie" Ruth (Schmidt) Spychalski was called to her heavenly home on July 17, 2018. Evie was born January 18, 1930, in Falls City, Nebraska. Her parents, Hugo and Dora Schmidt, and sister, Esther, moved to Bay City in 1940. She attended Bay City Central High School where she graduated in 1947. Evie was a member of the 1947 Class Reunion Committee (which still meets monthly for lunch).
In 1948 she met her husband Donald J. Spychalski, and four years later they were married on June 21, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church, Bay City, where they remained lifelong members. They recently celebrated their 66th anniversary.
She was employed mostly in women's retail, including Knepps, Nancy's Place, and the Duchess Shop, from where she retired.
Don and Evie traveled extensively with Sunshine Senior Tours. For 17 years, she enjoyed assisting owner Karen Smith as a tour guide.
Besides her husband Don, she is survived by her daughters, Gail (Dr. Donald) Haiderer (Bay City) and Lisa Beyer (Burton); granddaughters Holly Uhl (Harbor Beach), Elizabeth (Adam) Haiderer Wolverton (Haslett), and Rachel Haiderer (Bay City); great-granddaughters Allona and Abbigail. Also surviving are close nephews and niece, Gary Spychalski (Bay City), Tom Rusch (Casa Grande, AZ), Bethany Rusch (Saginaw) and great niece Katie Rusch (Saginaw).
Evie was predeceased by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Rev. Lowell H. Rusch .
Evie's family extends a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of McLaren Hospice, including Barb, Loretta, Tiffany, Krista, Ben, Amy, Anne, Brittany, Sarah, Michelle and Lynn.
Funeral and committal services will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church on Friday, July 20, 2018. Officiating will be Rev. Paul G. Kruse with private burial in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Evie will be taken to the church to lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
