Our loving, husband, father, and grandfather passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon November 22, 2015 at McLaren Bay Region. Age 80 years. The son of the late Pearl L. (Trombley) and Joseph R. Hughes Sr. was born on April 14, 1935 in Bay City and has resided here all of his life. He was a former member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church and was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. Joe graduated from Visitation Catholic High School. He was employed at Banks Hardware for many years and continued on with his career at General Motors Co.- Bay City Powertrain and retired with over twenty six years of service. He proudly served his country in the National Guard and served as a long time board member of the Bay County Conservation and Gun Club. . He was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed Trap and Sporting Clay shooting and most of all he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.
On September 8, 1956 he married his wife of fifty nine years the former Donna M. Ligney and she is left behind to cherish his memories along with one daughter and son-in-law; Mary Jo and Lyn Shepherd of Edmond, OK, one son; Joseph R. Hughes III of Carnation WA, one grandson; Joseph R. Hughes IV, one brother-in-law; Eugene "Bud" Leser of Bay City, one aunt and uncle; Marts and Bob Courier of Bay City, two nephews; Greg and Suzanne Leser of OH, Randy and Kendra Leser of Bay City, two nieces; Traci Golden of Laingsburg, MI and Tricia and Chris Dishaw of West Branch, his great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his parents Joseph and Pearl, he was preceded in death by one sister; Barbara J. Lesser and one sister-in-law; Sr. Mary Bernita Ligney. The Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at St. Catherine of Siena Parish 2956 E. N. Union Rd. Bay City, Michigan 48706. Rev. Fr. John S. Sarge and Sr. Virginia Scally, SNDdeN will officiate over the Funeral Rites with the Rite of Committal following at St. Patrick Cemetery/Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Vigil for the Deceased will take place at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Mr. Hughes will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial to the Bay County Conservation and Gun Club.
