Zacharko, Alexander T. Bay City, Michigan Lovingly known as Grandpa Z lived a long and active life. Mr. Zacharko passed away Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Plainview Assisted Living in Auburn, Michigan. Age 98 years. The son of the late Theodore and Anna (Gownak) Zacharko was born June 13, 1916 in Bay City, Michigan. Mr. Zacharko was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. He was a 1935 Central High School sports editor for the schools paper, an avid sports fan, member and co-founder of the Bay City Basketball Officials Association, member of St. James and Garber High School Athletic Association, named Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall of Garber High School, received the Garber High School 1st. annual sports achievement award. Mr. Zacharko was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #414, Elks B.P.O.E. #88 and coached in little league when Bay County received National Sanction in 1952. Mr. Zacharko is survived by three children, Roger (Penny) Zacharko, Bob and Pam Zacharko and Lexie Dorion; five grandchildren, Zachary Zacharko and his fiancée Kai Zander, Noah Zacharko and Staci Massey, Quinn and Aren Pakkiri, Blake and Janell Dorion and Nick and Katie Zacharko; four great grandchildren, Justin Zacharko, Lucas and Noah Dorion, Nathan and Alex Zacharko and Kai and Owen Pakkiri, many nieces and nephews who were very fond of him and Odile Trombley for being his neighbor and special friend for many years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Zacharko was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou (Mahoney); one son-in-law, Kenneth E. Dorion; one sister, Anna and his brothers, George and Irene, Paul and Betty and William and Isabella; step siblings, Michael (Mickey), Stephen and Sophia. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and residents of Plainview Assisted Living for their compassion and care and the staff of Hometown Hospice. The Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at St. Catherine of Siena Parish (St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church) Rev. Fr. George J. Serour and Sr. Virginia Scally, SNDdeN will officiate over the Funeral Rites with and Rite of Committal following at St. Patrick Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Vigil for the Deceased will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Zacharko will be taken to the church on Tuesday to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. and until the time of the Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial to the Helen Nickless Volunteer Free Clinic.
