Carl A. Legner "Sonny", of Bay City, entered Eternal Life on Saturday, March 30, 2013. He passed away peacefully at home, age 87 years, after a long illness. Carl was born in Bay City, Michigan, on September 2, 1925, the son of the late Karl and Wanda (Warschko) Legner. He grew up in Bay City and attended Central High School and Bay City Junior College. Carl served in the military during WWII with the Army Air Force, 19th Troop Carrier Squadron, stationed in Hawaii from 1943-1946. Carl was employed for many years as an insurance adjuster for Buckeye Union Insurance Company and Continental Insurance Company, retiring in 1982. On September 6, 1947, he married Vivian J. Smith. They were married for 65 years. She preceded him in death on March 2, 2013. Throughout the years, they enjoyed traveling and vacationed in Hawaii, Florida and Wisconsin. Carl was an avid sports fan, he enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards and spending time with his faithful companion Max. He was a life-long member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church. He is survived by his children, Alan (Carol) Legner and Diane Legner, all of Bay City; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, William and Shirley Smith of Mt. Morris and Geraldine King of Saginaw; many nieces, nephews and cousins; a grand-dog, Charlie; and good friends from Wisconsin and Florida. Carl was also preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Carl and Ethel Smith; and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Ed and Alice Kellogg and Burtcell King. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Littles and staff at the Jeppesen Radiation Oncology Center for the care given to Carl; and to Brenda his caregiver during hospice care at home. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Paul E. Schaewe. Private interment will be in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Ev.
