Dan R. Hughes of Bay City, Michigan passed away at the Toni and Trish House early Thursday morning, June 20, 2013. The son of the late Harliss and Doras M. (Brace) Miller Hughes he was born February 14, 1939 in Nitro, West Virginia. He was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church. He worked at American Hoist & Derrick until its closing as journeyman steel fabricator. He also worked at several area shops until his retirement. His hobbies were small engine repair and a love for antique cars. He left the gifts creativity, generosity and devotion to family. With a slight groan and roll of the eyes, we have even appreciated his corny sense of humor. We are proud to have received and will do our best to carry on his legacy of inventiveness and selfless doing for others. We have all been made better for having known Dan. After a long struggle with heart disease, he is finally at peace. Dan is survived by his wife Virginia (Piotrowski) Hughes whom he married on January 6, 1962. Also surviving are his daughter, Jean Hughes and her partner, Kathy Partin, his daughter, Jill (Hughes) Wert and her husband Rodney. He shared all he had and lived his life for his grandchildren, Raymond, Phillip and Ellen Wert. Also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Sue (Bob) Dufresne, Charlene (Jerry) Leach, Danny was a son to his parents-in-law, Alfred and Elois Piotrowski, a brother to his wife's siblings, Alena (Don) Sabourin, Betty Vincent, Mike (Linda), Tom (Kathy) and Paul (Mary Lou) Piotrowski. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and countless, close friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Amy Hughes and his step-father, Archie E. Hughes. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated, Monday June, 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church. Officiating will be Rev. Fr. Stephen J. Fillion with private inurnment in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Sunday to receive family and friends from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Vigil for the Deceased will take place on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Hughes will be taken to the church on Monday to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Following Dan's legacy of generosity, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his name to your favorite local charity, or to Toni & Trish House.
