Mr. Davis passed away Sunday morning February 28, 2010 at Heartland HealthCare in Saginaw, age 79. The son of the late James & Rosie (Smith) Davis, he was born October 24, 1930 in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Dorset is survived by his wife, Shirley, whom he married November 28, 1975. He joined the US Army in 1946, and retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1966. During his military career he served in Italy following WWII, and in the Korean conflict, 1950-53. Following his retirement from the Army, Mr. Davis served in law enforcement for more than 20 years, including the Chesaning Police Department, Ionia County Sheriff's Department, and the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department in Michigan. He was an expert marksman, and served as weapons instructor for many departments where he worked. In Oklahoma, he served at the Pontotoc County Sheriff's Department, as Chief of Police for the Village of Grandfield, and retired as a Lieutenant from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Department in 1986. Besides his career in law enforcement, he was best known for his hobby of rebuilding, refinishing, and tuning pianos. Dorset was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He loved singing, and was an avid fan of opera music.In addition to his wife, Dorset is survived by two daughters, Betty and Sue; eight step-children, Brian, Kevin, Sherry, Terry, Shawn, Laurie, Kelly and Bridget; and 14 grandchildren.The funeral service will take place at 12:00pm on Thursday March 4, 2010 at the Gephart Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. John R. Wood followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. Final interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10:00am until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family.
