E. Martin Berner of Kawkawlin, Michigan passed away early Sunday morning November 2, 2014 at his residence. Age 94 years. The son of the late Ernest John and Erna (Kussrow) Berner was born on October 3, 1920 in Bay City, Michigan and has resided in this area all of his life. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Ev. Lutheran Church, the Crump Fox Club and retired from Dow Chemical Company and Farming. He was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and an avid reader of Westerns. Mr. Berner is survived by one son and daughter-in-law; William E. and Laurie Berner, one daughter; Linda Shorkey, his grandchildren; Roger Shorkey and Sandi Rybkowski (Caregivers), Brian Shorkey, Todd Berner, Elizabeth Berner, Seth and Jennifer Drzewicki, great grandchildren; Christopher and Suheidy Shorkey, Maggie Berner, Brandon and Cecy Wilson and Daniel Wilson, great great grandchildren; Hailey Shorkey, Joseph and Avianna Wilson, one brother; Donald Berner, one sister-in-law; Irene Berner, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. On October 11, 1941 he married the former Phyllis Luttrell and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law; Ben and Cindy Luttrell, his son-in-law; Donald Shorkey, his brother; Richard Berner, sisters; Irene and Roy Schular, and Madeline and Robert VanSickle, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Jean Berner, Bob and Ethel Burns, Robert and Ruth Luttrell, Forrest and Mary Luttrell, Harley and Irene Luttrell and Tina Shorkey. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Roger and Sandi, Dr. Greg Brown, Dr. Prasad, Jim Knight, PA-C Fresenius Dialysis for the kind and compassionate care they provided for Mr. Berner during the time they cared for him. Funeral and Committal Service will take place Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Ev. Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Seafert with private interment in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Berner will be taken to the church on Wednesday to lie in state from 10:00 a.m. and until the time of service. Memorial cards for St. Bartholomew Ev. Lutheran Church General Fund will be available at the funeral home. .
