Betty passed away peacefully with her family by her side at McLaren Bay Region on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the age of 94. She was born on July 22, 1930 to the late William and Jane (Ward) Majeska in Essexville, Michigan. She was a faithful member of Corpus Christi Parish. She was a lifelong member, for over 50 years, at the local Elks Club, Moose Lodge and the American Legion. Betty retired from Monitor Sugar after 25 years of service. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend to all that knew her. She had such an outgoing spirit and made so many friends throughout her lifetime, she was truly loved by all who met her and knew her.
Most importantly, Betty wanted others to know how much she cared, no matter how big or small it was, she was always there and never forgot to send a card. She really made an impact on everyone she met and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.
Betty is survived by her children, Linda Bosco, Kay Ann (Richard) Daniel and David Houghtaling; step son, Ron (Karen) Houghtaling; 19 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Judy Silverthorn; step son-in-law, Joe Moore; and brother-in-law’s, Lawrence Begley and Richard Zwiernikowski. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlin J. Houghtaling; children, Larry Silverthorn, Keith Houghtaling and Harlin J. Houghtaling III; step daughter, Bonnie Moore; son-in-law, Bob Bosco; two brothers, Ward and Tom; four sisters, Edna, Mary, Maureen and Helen and loving companion for many later years in her life, Henry Ballard.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at the McLaren ICU Unit and 6 West. They would also like to say thank you to the staff at Bay City Comfort Care for their kindness and compassion that they showed to mom for the short amount of time she was there.
Funeral Mass for Betty will be taking place on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Parish with a private interment to take place at a later time at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The family will be present to receive visitors on Monday, November 11, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home and on Tuesday at the Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Betty loved donating to many places, but two important ones to her were, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society. In honor of Betty, the family asks that you would consider making a donation in her name to these two charities.
