Emmons G. Miller "Bing" Bay City, Michigan The son of the late Carl A. and Paula B. (Bergann) Miller passed away early Thursday morning December 12, 2013 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan at the age of 94 years. He was born August 3, 1919 in Bay City, Michigan and has resided here all of his life. On December 3, 1978 he retired from the Bay City Fire Department and was the eldest living retired fireman and also retired from the Ambrose-Squires Funeral Homes after many years of service. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 414, Robert King Jr. Chapter of the D.A.V # 9, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter # 514 and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Mr. Miller proudly served his county in the United States Army, he served during World War II in Central Europe as a private first class, Company A 216th Medical Battalion, 4th and 16th Armored Division and was wounded in France and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Bing was an active member of the Bay County Veterans Council for many years and devoted many years to other community projects throughout Bay County. Mr. Miller is survived by one son and one daughter-in-law; William Carl and Valerie J. Miller of The Villages, Florida, one son-in-law; Walker Tackett of Kendallville, IN, ten grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother-in-law; Clara Schultz of Essexville, Pauline and Roger Urlaub of Alpena, one sister-in-law; Alice Miller, his special goddaughter; Susan and Ron Gillis of Bay City and many other nieces, nephews and special friends. On June 6, 1942 he married the love of his life, the former; Josephine D. Gillen and she preceded him in death on May 1, 1996. Bing was also preceded in death by two daughters; Kathleen Ann Larson and Linda Jo Tackett, one son; Michael J. Miller, three brothers; Lyle, Walter and Arthur Miller and one brother-in-law; Leon Schultz. The Funeral Liturgy and Rite of Committal will take place Monday December 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Stephen J. Fillion under the auspices of the United States Army and the Bay County Veterans Council. Private interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery in Kawkawlin, Michigan. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council #414 will conduct a Bible Presentation on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Miller will be taken to the church on Monday to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. and until the time of the Mass. In lieu of flowers memorial cards will be available for The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant or the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
