Mr. Erich Kurt Gaertner, of Bay City, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at his residence with his family by his side, age 95. He was born on October 2, 1921, in Germany, and along with his father and mother immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in New York in 1922. Erich served with the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, he went back to school and graduated from Bay City Central High School. In 1939, Erich and his father formed the family business, E. Gaertner Builders, which Erich has continued to operate up until his death. Together they started out primarily building homes, then moved on to commercial work, either building or renovating several churches, medical facilities, schools and many other businesses including the Bavarian Inn. Erich has always had a loyal commitment to his customers, maintained strong ties to the local builders' community and has forever been a proud Union only company. He was a member of the Bay County Home Builders Association. Erich was an active, longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church. For many years, he found great pleasure in piloting his own plane.
On June 25, 1964, Erich married the former Barbara J. Wood and she preceded him death on September 13, 2013. He is survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Erich was also preceded in death by his father, Erich Conrad Gaertner; his mother, Marie (Dirla) Gaertner; his step-mother, Linda (Staudacher) Gaertner; and his sister, Ruth E. (William A.) Ott.
The Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Rev. William H. Allwardt followed by Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Army and the Bay County Veterans Council. Private interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Gaertner will lie instate at the church on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church. www.gephartfuneralhome.com
