Eugene D. Groenhof

Eugene passed away, Saturday, March 29, 2025 at McLaren Bay Region with his family by his side at the age of 86. He was born January 27, 1939 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late Martin and Agnes (Stremler) Groenhof. Eugene was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, where he played the piano and organ. He attended Hope College, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He then went on to University of Colorado, where he completed his Master’s degree in Chemistry. Eugene was a Chemist at Dow Corning for over 26 years, he had 16 U.S. Patents and several International Patents. After retiring, Eugene attended Central Michigan University where he obtained his Bachelors of Music Degree. Eugene and his wife Hazel, loved traveling where they would rock hunt. He enjoyed playing music and spending time with his family.

Eugene is survived by his two daughters, Lisa (Ricardo) Nava and Kristen (Lee) Ringel; five grandchildren, Stephanie Nava (Adam Stanfel), Katrina (Stefan) Josephson, Amanda (Shane) Hemphill, Matthew Ringel and Elizabeth Ringel; three great grandchildren, William Hemphill, Talia Josephson and Eleanor Hemphill; brothers, Ben Groenhof and Jerry (Ruth) Groenhof; sister-in-law, Esther Hanson; half-siblings, Lynne (Ron) Rademaker, Sherry Mills, Anne (Dave) Christopher, Ann Harthorn, and Larry Tibbet. In addition to his parents, Eugene is preceded in death by his wife who he married August 18, 1962, Hazel (Rosendahl) Groenhof; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Veltman.

Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. Officiating will be Rev. Brenna Overland with interment following at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, April 3, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home and on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be considered to First Presbyterian Church.
