Mr. Hughes went to be with his wife of 70 years on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Sheffield Bay Assisted Living. Age 89 years. The son of the late Anthony and Mary (Szymanski) Hughes was born October 24, 1928 in Bay City, Michigan. He married the love of his life, Ruth I Kussro on June 26, 1948 and she preceded him in death on July 8, 2018. Mr. Hughes was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church where he was an usher, trustee and served on the building committee. George was an apprentice carpenter and journeyman. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known for his good humor, quick wit and come back lines. He also enjoyed yardwork, bowling, fishing, hunting and ice fishing.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his two children, Nancy Peil and Ricky Hughes; six grandchildren, Chris (Steve), Karen, Scott, Anthony, Zachary and Corrie; two great grandchildren, Addison and Lincoln; sister, Martha (Robert) Courier; sister-in-law, Leola Kussro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Thomas Peil; brothers, John (Pearl), Joseph (Pearl), Edward (Virginia), Anthony (Louise), Aloysius (Marion) and Frank (Evelynn); sisters, Isabelle (Clarence) Woods and Betty (Elmer) Neemec; brother-in-law, Edward (Lorraine) Kussro, Frederick (Maxine) Kussro and Jack Kussro; sister-in-law, Betty (Jim) Scherf.
Funeral and Committal services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Rev. Paul E. Schaewe with private interment following in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial cards for the St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church building fund or McLaren Hospice will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Sheffield Bay and McLaren Hospice for the care they gave to George.
