James C. Engelhardt

Engelhardt, James C. Sanford, Michigan Formerly of Bay City Mr. Engelhardt passed away peacefully with his Lord Sunday, July 17, 2011 in Midland, Michigan. Age 88 years. He was the son of the late John and Anna (Ludwigkowski) Engelhardt. Jim was born September 7, 1922 in Bay City, Michigan. He graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1941. He married the former Maxine Steinbauer, his loving wife of 65 years on January 12, 1946 and she survives his passing. He served in the United States Army during WW II in the communications field in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy from 1942 - 1945. He was a member of the American Legion Post 171 in Gladwin, MI and the National League All Star Baseball Team while serving in the United States Army in 1944 and in 1947, he and his team took the Saginaw Valley Baseball Association Championship. Jim has always been a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed watching baseball, basketball and football on television. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. He was employed at Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 36 years before retiring in 1977. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Beaverton and a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bay City. Surviving besides his wife Maxine are three sons and their spouses; James (Marsha) Engelhardt of Beaverton, Daniel (Karen) Engelhardt of Alger and Steven (Traci) Engelhardt of Saginaw, four grandchildren; Brian (Mandy) Engelhardt, Matthew (Katie) Engelhardt, Adriana and Jordan Engelhardt, five great grandchildren; Ethan and Evan Engelhardt, Collin and Carly Engelhardt and Hailey Fennell, one sister-in-law; Iris Kraut and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and their spouses; William (Edith) Engelhardt, Walter (Olive) Engelhardt, John (Francis) Engelhardt, one sister and her husband; Gertrude (August) Behmlander, mother-in-law and father-in-law; Edwin and Charlotte Steinbauer, and one brother-in-law; Emil Kraut. Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gephart Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 201 W. Midland St. Bay City, Michigan 48706 Officiating will be Pastor Paul W. Metzger with interment following in Floral Gardens under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Council and the United States Army. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. and until the time of services.
