Louis Francis Kohn, died Friday, November 18, 2016 at his daughters home. He was born December 17, 1925 the third son of Henry E. and Ethel (Moon) Kohn. He attended the Bay City School System graduating with the January of 1944 class, which he had served as the class president during his junior and senior years. He tested for the U.S. Navy V-7/V-12 officers training programs and enlisted in December 1943. Upon graduation he was sent t Marquette University in Milwaukee in the V-12 program where he graduated in May of 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree and commissioned Ensign to U.S.N.R. He then served aboard the U.S.S. Perkins DDR 877 in the Pacific area until his release to inactive duty in August of 1947. He then attended the University of Michigan graduating in June of 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon the advent of the Korean War he was recalled to active duty as a Lieutenant and served two years aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Henderson DD 785 off the Korean coasts as she was a gunfire support ship for both the Marines and Army. His Naval service also included a ten day "stand by call up" during the Cuban crisis in October of 1962. He hired into Saginaw Steering Gear in June of 1954 as a Machine Operator but was transferred to salaried positions where he was the foreman, night superintendent of Plant #3 and as Plant #6 started up he was assembly superintendent. In 1969 he was transferred to Personnel Manager-Labor Relations where he participated in seven contract negotiations with the U.A.W. until his retirement in March of 1986 with 32 years of service. He married Ruth VanTol-Trombley on August 20, 1955 and together with her daughter, Debra enjoyed 43 married years until her death in 1998. Surviving are his step-daughter, Debra (Pedro) Trombley-Zarazua; two grandchildren, Alicia Zarazua and Pedro Zarazua Jr.; his brothers, Kalvin K. (Ann Murray) Kohn and Lesley (Loretta Kolb) Kohn and his close friend, Carol Feather and her children, Jeff (Andrea) Feather, Jennifer (Kevin) Moore, John (Kelly) Feather and Jeanne (Dave) Kraycsir. Besides his wife, Ruth and his parents he was also preceded in death by Elayne (Bob) Goward and brother, Eldon (Lorraine) Kohn. Funeral Services will take place Monday, November 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Andreas H. Teich with interment following in Floral Gardens Cemetery followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council and the U.S. Navy. The family will be present at the funeral home on Sunday to receive family and friends from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
