Margaret "Marty" Katt

Margaret "Marty" Katt, of Bay City, was granted her final wish to pass peacefully at home with her family on January 9th. She was born on September 14th, 1948 to Richard and Margaret (Thorne) Wegener. Marty graduated from T.L. Handy High School in 1966. She first met her future husband Thomas the summer of 1963 at Roll-Air Rink where she stole his heart. They married on February 6th, 1971. Marty retired from McLaren Bay Region after 46 years as a medical technician. She cared about the quality of her work and was a wealth of knowledge. Her co-workers could always rely on her to get her work done but also never knew what she was going to say next. She could turn a bad day at work into a room full of laughter. Those who knew her well knew she was a shopper who enjoyed the thrill of the hunt. She scoured the Tri-Cities for Cabbage Patch dolls, Beanie Babies and so much more. Her main hobby was spoiling the people she loved, especially her grandchildren. They always knew grandma would share her sweets, give them the last bite and make sure her house was filled with their favorite foods. Marty was never happier than when the house was filled with grandkids.Marty leaves behind her family to carry on her legacy of making education a priority, always ironing clothes and starting Christmas shopping in August. Also left behind is her husband of 44 years Tom who affectionately called her Marn; daughters Amanda (Phillips) and Ashley (Kernstock); cherished sister Dianne (Craig) Carson; brothers Robert (Shirley) Wegener and Richard (Diane) Wegener; grandchildren Kai Phillips, Zoe, Zander and Izabella Gale, Makaylah and Quentin Roberts, and Ellie Kernstock whom she never got a chance to spoil; her shopping girls and nieces Elizabeth Walkowiak and Emily (Noah Botimer) Carson; a sister in-law Mary Katt; several nephews, nieces and cousins; a special "daughter in-law" Rachel Roberts and Marty's dog Ling Ling. She left many decades of memories with her forever friends Susan Banaszak and Christine Walker. Marty was preceded in death by her parents, brother in-law Robert Katt, sister in-law Barbara Katt and her Shih Tzus Gizmo, Casey and Bai Lee. An immeasurable amount of gratitude goes to her nurse Elizabeth Humphrey. She shed many a tear with Marty and Tom. No matter how stubborn Marty was being, Elizabeth never quit trying. Even when she was weak and in pain, Marty would do anything for anyone. If she knew someone who was in need, she would give the shirt off her back or find one at Goodwill. Even towards the end Marty still tried to take care of her family any way she could. Her memory never ceased to amaze. Marty could remember details that many of us have long forgotten. Our lives were better because of her. We will never forget our cornerstone, our rock.A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bay County Humane Society or the Bay Area Women's Center.
