Martin L. Platt, Sr.

Mr. Martin L. Platt, Sr. passed away early Monday morning, July 18, 2016, at the Pine River Healthcare Center in St. Louis, Michigan, age 89. The son of the late Martin E. and Katherine (Hickman) Platt, he was born on September 5, 1926 in Manistee. As a young man Martin sailed on car ferries on the Great Lakes. He served in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Infantry Division during WWII. Martin was a law enforcement officer and was the Sheriff with the Bay County Sheriff Department. He also owned the Overpass Bar in Auburn for many years. Martin enjoyed flying airplanes, trapping muskrat, and hunting and fishing.
Mr. Platt is survived by his four daughters, Dawn Williams of Saginaw, Marsha LaFreniere and Lynette Swiatlowski, both of Manistee and Michele Platt of Saginaw; a step-daughter, Sandra (Royce) Wilbanks of Rhodes; many grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Colleen Calahan of Rhodes; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Martin was also preceded in death by his wife, Norine (Sauve) Platt in 2000; and his son, Martin L. Platt, Jr. in 2008.
The Funeral Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Fr. Steven M. Gavit. Private interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Military Honors, conducted by the U.S. Army and the Bay County Veterans Council, taking place at 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Bay County or to the Veterans Administration Voluntary Service. www.gephartfuneralhome.com
