Neil passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born January 13, 1934 in Bay City, Michigan to the late Edward & Edna (Haberland) Smith. He served in the Army as a tank commander from 1954-1956. He married Shirleyann (Hall) on October 12, 1957 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on May 15, 2014. He worked for Bay City Chevrolet for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He was a devoted and long-life member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. Neil enjoyed golfing, bowling and spending time with his family.
Neil is survived by his daughter, Patricia Doerr of Montrose, son and daughter-in-law Terrence & Carrie Smith of Bay City; grandchildren Patrick Doerr of Montrose, Amelia (Doerr) & Nathan Smith of Vassar, AJ Smith of Burton, and Anna Smith of Bay City; great grandchildren, Henry, Everett & Waylon Smith of Vassar. In addition to his parents, Neil is preceded in death by his sisters, Arlene Huskins (1999), Joann Gingrich (2004), and special friend, Elva Peterson (2024).
A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2024 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Pastor Jacob Reich with interment following at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home and on Monday, August 19, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be considered to the American Diabetes Association.
