Norbert passed away at the age of 74 years at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans on Sunday September 16, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Norb was born on December 4, 1943 to Isadore and Eleanor Bonkowski in Pinconning.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved companion of over 20 years, Maryanna Killingbeck of Auburn; two sisters, Monica Bills of Linwood and Martha (John) DeWeese of Bay City and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl and David Bonkowski and three sisters, Loretta Malowinski, Dorothy Tyslenko and Elizabeth Szmagaj/Ratkos.
Norbert enjoyed farming in his younger years and also worked at Wicks Marine Terminal. He was an inspector for Michigan Bean and Grain and worked at Auburn Tool and Die until its closing. Norbert then became owner and operator of Mr. Top Hat Chimney Sweep for 20 years before retiring. Norb also served in the U.S. Army between 1966 and 1968 during the Vietnam War stationed in Colorado.Norbert enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, gardening and taking care of his yard with its many flowers.
Norb will be deeply missed and welcomed back in the resurrection by many who cared for him. Acts 24:15 and Rev. 21:3&4.
Memorial service will take place on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home on Friday, October 5, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to their favorite charity. Family will have a celebration of Norbs life at a later date. Family would like to thank the staff at Grand Rapids Home for Veterans for the excellent care given to Norb for the past 2 years.
