Robert J. MacLeod

Robert passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024 with his family by his side, at Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, at the age of 92. The son of the late James D. and Leona MacLeod was born October 13, 1931 in Bay City, Michigan. Robert graduated with the first graduating class of T.L. Handy Highschool of 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951. He was stationed in LaRachelle, France during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1954. He met his wife Audrey M. MacLeod while they were in high school, they married on July 20, 1951 and raised four children together. Following Audrey suffering a severe medical condition, he met his lifelong partner Judy M. VanTol. They committed their lives to each other and blended their families and religion. He was a life member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, a member of the vestry committee, a lay reader and teacher. He conducted services throughout the thumb area with Father Scantlebury.

 As a child, Robert, his brothers and dad helped his grandfather in their commercial fishing business ranging from Saginaw Bay to the Black River. He continued his education at Northeastern School of Commerce. He started his career at Aladian Home in Bay City, then went on to work for Kmart serving in department, district, and regional management positions. He retired after 30 years of service. Robert was a people person, enjoyed gaining conversation and meeting new people, an avid history buff, an active volunteer P.T.A president and had a passion for the outdoors. He was a volunteer Boy Scout Leader. Robert had a love for sports from an early age, especially baseball and basketball and played in high school. His favorite teams were U of M Football, MSU basketball and was a Detroit Tiger Fan. He was an avid league bowler and enjoyed shooting pool. He had a great passion for fly fishing and loved fishing inland waters. He also taught fly tying classes. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play Little League.

 Left to carry on his legacy are his children, Robert J. (Debra M.) MacLeod , Deborah (John) Campbell, Michael J. MacLeod and Raymond (Pamela) MacLeod; stepchildren, Theron (Angela) Zaucha and Marla (Terry) Henika; his grandchildren, Lacey L. MacLeod, Shawn (April) Campbell, Shannon (Marc) Wilson, Robert (Curtis) Campbell-Brown, Zendra Macleod, Daysha (Matt) Brusie, step grandchildren, Spencer Zaucha and Kendra Zaucha, Buddy (Angela) Henika, Guy Henika, Louis Henika; step great grandson, Leo Henika; eight great grandchildren, Daedre, Ariana and Lydia, Gabriel, Lily, Daisy, Ivory and Dylan; two sister-in-law’s, Shirley MacLeod and Linda MacLeod and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; and life partner, Judy; he was also preceded in death by one sister, Audrey G. MacLeod; brothers, Phillip MacLeod and Donald MacLeod and one grandson, Adam R. Harris.

 The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center and the CLC 2 West for their love, extraordinary care and compassion they provided Robert and his family.

 At the request of Robert cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Nancy Mayhew with inurnment following in the church columbarium. The family will be present to receive family and friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
