Our loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Friday night April 23, 2010 at Covenant Select Specialty Hospital in Saginaw, age 77. The son of the late Clifford & Edna (Coones) Smith, he was born February 20, 1933 in Pigeon and had served his country in the US Army. Robert was a truck driver with Tanner & Dailey and then worked at Bay City Chevrolet and retired in 1988 from Saginaw Steering Gear. He loved farming and was very proud of his beef cattle. Robert enjoyed driving and working on his numerous tractors and other machinery as well. Always a 'Jack of all trades', he was very skilled in electrical, plumbing and welding, often fabricating his own parts for his farming machines. On May 29, 1958 Robert married the former Margaret E. Charters and she survives him along with their two daughters, Robbie (George) Hutter of Midland and Sherie St. Charles of Utah; two grandchildren, Ben and Abby Hutter; a brother, Ronald (Doris) Smith of Port Hope; a sister, Joyce Ballard of Florida; a brother-in-law, William (Millie) Charters; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Voss and Patricia (Jerry) Schedlbower; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Robert was also preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters, Edward, Gerald, Marvin, Jean, Audrey, Janet, Evelyn and Doris. The funeral service will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday April 27, 2010 at the Gephart Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Carol M. Blair-Bouse. Interment will be in Floral Gardens Cemetery followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00pm, Monday from 2:00 to 8:00pm and on Tuesday from 10:00am until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family.
