Sidney Ogden Heyl, 81, passed away on February 9, 2025. Born on September 21, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Sid later moved to Houghton Lake, where he built a life filled with family, laughter, and cherished memories.
Sid was married to his beloved wife, Kathryn Heyl, for 59 years. The two met at Northeastern and built a lifetime of love and family together. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Diane Hegenauer (Chris), Danielle Heyl, and Dana Heyl. He was a proud grandfather to Stephanie Hegenauer, Kathleen Latimer, Jennifer Hegenauer, Stephen Hegenauer, and Chelsea Hernandez (Candelario), and a great-grandfather to little Marley Hernandez. He is also survived by his brother, David Heyl along with many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Ogden and Esther Heyl.
Sid had a zest for life and a passion for sports, playing softball and earning a place in the Bay County Hall of Fame. He also loved coaching basketball and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game with others. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and hunting at Houghton Lake, working in his yard, and caring for his animals—especially feeding the birds and squirrels and spending time with his late dog, Skittlez.
Sid also had a passion for playing pool with friends, bowling, boating, and water skiing in his younger years. He embraced winter fun, enjoying snowmobiling and tobogganing. He loved playing outdoor games, pinball, foosball, and board games, always bringing joy and friendly competition to those around him. Sid also treasured time spent playing cards, hosting bonfires with his family, and sharing stories.
Through it all, Sid’s humor remained with him until the very end, bringing smiles to the faces of those around him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to All Valley Home and Hospice Care, especially Sid’s regular visiting nurse, Jennifer, for her kindness and compassionate care.
