Victor Lee Campau, age 86 passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. The son of the late Victor and Margaret (Dwyer) Campau was born October 21, 1929 in Bay City, Michigan. He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish-Holy Trinity Parish. Victor attended T. L. Handy High School, North Eastern School of Commerce and the Naval Diving School of Oceans. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years, 15 of those years spent on submarines, he was so proud he had the opportunity to seen the world. Victor was awarded 4 Good Conducts Medals, China Service European Occupation Medal, Korean Presidential Union Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal for saving a boy who fell from the deck into the water next to the submarine, without hesitation he dove off the ship to rescue him. Vic was a member of the Fleet Reserve, VA and the DAV.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he worked for HUD managing housing working as a CPA, he owned and operated Vic's Sport Shop and he had his own contracting business. Vic played and loved sports in his youth and was an avid fan of football, baseball, enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and was a fan of U of M sports. He coached local Pony League for many years and many of his players remember him for that. He also lived in the Florida Keys (Cudjoe Key) for 12 years and his favorite thing to do was go fishing as the ocean was a big part of his life.
He married Barbara Janene Kinsey on October 19, 1963 (the girl next door) at Holy Trinity Church, they would have celebrated 53 years of marriage this year and she survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Victor (Angelia) and David, his grandson, Sean Paul; his sister Ellen Malone; his brother, John; his brothers-in-law, Hubert Lynch and Gerald Malone; his special niece and caregiver, Kay Shull, his special, caring nephew and courier, Michael Campau. Vic was a wonderful family man who loved his "Special Nieces and Nephews" he was proud to be their uncle. He will be missed by all the gang at "Big Boy", his friends he had coffee with every morning. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur "Pete" (Audrey) and Charles "Pat" (Bernice); his sister, Kathryn "Kay" Lynch and sister-in-law, Shirley Campau.
At the request of Victor cremation has taken place. A Memorial Liturgy will take place on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Parish-Holy Trinity Church. The celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Robert S. Gohm with the Rite of Committal and Military Honors following in Floral Gardens Cemetery. The family will be present at the Gephart Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services to receive family and friends. The Vigil for the Deceased will take place Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
