Mr. Schmidt age 90, was called home to his Lord early Tuesday morning, December 15, 2015, at his residence, with his family by his side. The son of the late Gustave and Johanna (Frank) Schmidt was born May 23, 1925 in Bentley, Michigan. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Amelith. Mr. Schmidt retired from Dow Chemical Company. He was a member of L.F.A. and the American Legion Post #439 in Saginaw, MI. He coached men's and women's softball for many years and was a long time coach for Danny's Market. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, traveling to see family, and playing cards with his card group. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife the former Doris B. Kloha whom he married May 24, 1947, his children and their spouses: Kay and Les Schwab, Joyce and Curt Adams, Bill and Brenda Schmidt, Philip and Barb Schmidt, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Ellen Hardy and Elmer and Jan Kloha, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law: Elsie and Otto Engelhardt, his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lorraine Kloha, Lillian and Bill Taylor, Howard and Shirley Kloha, Robert Hardy, Donna Kloha and Otto Rosin. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of McLaren Hospice for the kind and compassionate care received during their time of need. Funeral services will take place Friday, December 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church of Amelith. Officiating will be Rev. Stephen P. Starke with interment following in the church cemetery, followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. The family will be present at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday to receive family and friends from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Schmidt will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
