William H. Smith

Mr. William H. "Bill" Smith, of Bay City, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Bay Shores Nursing Home at the age of 82 years. The son of the late William McIntosh and Alice (Kolb) Smith was born June 4, 1931 in Bay City, MI. Bill retired as a truck driver from Roadway Express. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict where he received two purple hearts and was a member of the Royal Order of the Purple Hearts. In his spare time he enjoyed working with his hands, especially doing carpentry work. He is survived by his children and their spouse; Sue and Mark Gillman, Sandy and Don Quast, Sherry and Louis Mason, Bill and Eileen Smith, Cindy and Douglas Priem, Ron and Lori Smith, twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, his sister; Elizabeth Ann Peterson, one brother and sister-in-law; Thomas and Jeannine Smith, three sisters-in-law. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife; Arlene J. Smith, three brothers; Loren, Norman and Ronald Smith. Funeral and Committal Services will take place Friday, November 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran. Officiating will be Pastor Reuben Garcia followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. Private interment will take place in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Bill will be taken to the church on Friday to lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
